Cyclones Interested in Tony Freeman?

Mon May 12, 2008 at 10:47:12 PM EDT

The title of this Des Moines Register story says so, but the article doesn't mention anything. The 6-1 senior to be averaged over 13 points a game for the Hawkeyes this past year.

I would love Freeman on this team because of his ability to score, but I'm not sure how the scholarship situation would shake out. While it wouldn't be crazy to expect another Cyclone defection, it would also be strange to burn a scholarship for two years for just one year on the court. If he could walk-on, though, you have to take him in a heartbeat. We'd have a nice looking guard court in a couple of years.

Who's Your Starter: Left Guard

Mon May 12, 2008 at 12:47:29 AM EDT

QB: Austen Arnaud (So.)
RB: Alexander Robinson (So.)
TE: Derrick Catlett (Jr.)
WR: Marquis Hamilton (Jr.)
WR: RJ Sumrall (Sr.)
WR: Sedrick Johnson (Fr.)
LT: Matt Hulbert (So.)

Continuing in the one of the more difficult parts of this little experiment, we move on to the battle for left guard. With our little redo at left tackle, we went with sophomore Matt Hulbert, narrowly edging out freshman Trey Baysinger. At the guard spot, we have a returning starter against another redshirt who was held in high esteem.

Kelechi Osemele 6-5, 333 (Fr.)
Reggie Stephens 6-3, 331 (Jr.)

Alex Alvarez has also been mentioned at guard in the past, although it's a lot more evident he's getting snaps at center.

Stephens has gotten starts in the past, but K.O. was among the most highly regarded of all the redshirts that were supposedly playing better than the O-Line that was starting for us last year.

So, who is it? The returning starter or the hot-shot frosh?

Iowa State Offers Tate Forcier, Much Like Everyone Else

Thu May 08, 2008 at 06:06:01 PM EDT

Iowa State has offered a scholarship to Robert "Tate" Forcier, one of the more sought after quarterback prospects in the West. This normally wouldn't be a big deal, but Tate is kind of unique - he's got his own website chronicling his recruitment. You can log on and see the actual scholarship offer from Coach Chizik, as well as numerous other head football coaches.

ISU Scholarship Offer

ISU is going up against schools such as LSU, Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska and a host of others for Forcier.

While ISU would be considered a longshot for Forcier, let's keep an eye out on the possible recruitment.

Cyclone Graduate Assistant Arrested

Fri May 02, 2008 at 07:04:36 PM EDT

Ames Tribune

A member of the Iowa State University football coaching staff was arrested after allegedly breaking into a car impound lot and trying to drive his car out through the steel gate.
Floyd Howard White, 30, of 3709 Tripp St., was arrested Friday morning and charged with OWI first offense and criminal trespassing causing damage of over $200, both serious misdemeanors.
According to court documents filed in the case, police first saw White as he was walking along a gravel road near the entrance of Butch's Towing impound lot. The officer stopped to talk with him, and noticed that the entire steel gate blocking the impound entrance was lying on the ground, and heavy damage had been sustained to the steel and wooden support poles.
When the officer asked White about the gate, he reportedly said it was like that when he got there.
The officer walked White onto the lot to locate White's car, and when they located it, the officer saw that the front end was badly damaged, "consistent with driving through the gate."
The officer also reportedly saw paint transfer from the vehicle to the gate.
White had the keys to the car with him at the time, the police report said. After smelling alcohol on White's breath, the officer put him through a series of sobriety tests, including a preliminary breath test.

I'd be quite surprised if Mr. White is with the team to begin the season....

Is Daniyal Robinson the New Assistant MBB Coach?

Wed Apr 30, 2008 at 10:57:56 PM EDT

Daniyal Robinson Bio

Strong rumors that Daniyal Robinson of UALR, former Indian Hills player, will likely be Jean Prioleau's replacement on the ISU staff. He also coached at Illinois State.

Don't know a whole lot about him at this time.

Jean Prioleau Leaves ISU

Wed Apr 30, 2008 at 02:02:43 PM EDT

Assistant coach Jean Prioleau made the call the other day to leave ISU for a job as an associate head coach for Texas Christian. In what seems like a lateral move at best (future coaching aspirations are a consideration), Iowa State loses one of their primary recruiters and more personable assistant coaches.

The primary bit of concern here is that Pre was the point man for Ames super prospect Harrison Barnes, son of Ron Harris and the subject of affection for many Cyclone fans. He was also the guy that helped being Wes Johnson to Ames. It's yet to be seen how this will affect the status of Barnes' recruitment, but the two were very close.

We can debate whether or not Jean was trying to posture himself for a head job (which I'm sure he was), or whether he took a step down, but I think it's going to be much more interesting trying to figure out his replacement.

McDermott apparently has some names in mind. Will one of those be Cyclone grad assistant Erik Crawford? He's got a high basketball IQ, but no one knows if he can recruit. I have no doubt, though, that McDermott wants to hire someone he's known a while. I'd be surprised if he doesn't hire someone with a personal connection. I like Crawford, but part of me will still be disappointed if its a good ol' boys hire.

Big 12 Roundtable

Tue Apr 29, 2008 at 01:57:51 PM EDT

Okay, so I'm going to make some time for this. Matt at Crimson and Cream Machine put up a spring roundtable, so here are my answers....

1.    Who are some of the new faces that emerged in the spring who could be serious playmakers for your team this fall?

What, you mean Bo Williams? I don't know if we saw any real standout performances that came out of nowhere during the Spring. I did see some nice play out of Chris Singleton, and there is hope that he could team up with Allen Bell to form a talented cornerback duo. Both guys ooze with potential, but both need to figure out a way to get some big plays going.

2.    What is your biggest concern following the spring?

The offense looked bad during the spring game, but apparently had been doing well during the previous practices. The inside defensive line and the outside linebackers till worry me because I don't know what we have there. That and special teams. Always special teams.

3.    Any major changes (philosophy, coaching or personnel) that you are concerned about?

Not a whole lot of turnover. I'm interested to see how integrating the no-huddle into our offense will work, especially in loud road environments. The integration of the option into the offense will also probably provide for some early mishaps.

4.    Looking over the 2008 schedule which home and away game are you most concerned about?

As far as home games go, the one that concerns me the most is Kent State, if for no other reason than it will set the early tone for the season. We really should handle SDSU, but a close game or loss to Kent State would likely spell bad news, while a big win could build momentum.

On the road, the UNLV game has the same effect. We could legitimately be 3-0 or 1-2 heading into Las Vegas. Gene Chizik may not even have a road win yet. The Rebs are still pissed about something, I think. The nonconference slate is very important this year if we're legitimately thinking postseason.

5.    Time for your way too early predictions (Yes, you can change them in August). Rank how you see your division finishing up this coming season.

  1. Missouri
  1. Kansas
  1. Colorado
  1. Nebraska
  1. Iowa State
  1. Kansas State

Mizzou is clearly the class of the North. Colorado could as easily finish in second or fifth. They were a weird team last year. Kansas State certainly didn't look impressive last year...
