Monday ISU Basketball Thoughts
To all of you in Central Iowa, experiencing this snow storm, how much does this suck? I mean, it's the 3rd or 4th major storm. Kids have never had so many snow days here, it's crazy. Just hoping all of you are safe, and can get out of this weather!
Last weekend was a bit of a disappointment from the basketball team. When they continue to play the same way over and over, and continue to make the same mistakes over and over, it's tough to keep things interesting. I think for these last 8 Big 12 games, I'm going to devise a drinking game to play, because honestly, it might be the only way to keep this season interesting....
I heard a guy call into a local radio station, asking what he thought the chances were for ISU to win this week. He gave 2% @ KU, and less than 5% @ Mizzou. Well, this guy obviously doesn't know about Kenpom.com, where you can look up these sorts of things!
According to Pomeroy, we've got a 9% chance to win @ Mizzou, and 3% chance to win @ KU. Going back to my probability classes in school, I believe that would give us about a 0.27% chance of going 2-0, and an 88% chance of going 0-2... Not much of a suprise, but an attempt to make what looks to be a rough week sound interesting!
The Des Moines Register reported that Gilstrap is leaning towards coming back next year, provided the NCAA grant him an additional year. Great.... Now we can have another year of "what if" scenarios, if the NCAA rules against it.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to have 'Quis next year, and he could use another year at this level. I'm just not going to get too excited until we hear from the NCAA. Since we aren't a powerhouse, I don't expect the news to be good, but hopefully the trend reverses for ISU.
Doing a quick look at the Big 12 teams, it looks like we'll get 6 teams in the conference, with probably the 7th and 8th teams going NIT. My man Chris (resident Bracketologist for SBN) at Blogging The Bracket has 6 teams for the Big 12 as well, so I'm not really saying anything groundbreaking.
But while mathematically being in the running for the NIT, when you look at the schedule ahead, I can't find more than 2 more conference wins, with in my opinion the most likely scenario is winning one more. Either way, and I hate to say this, but I'm already counting down the days until the first pitch for the Minnesota Twins. Wish I wasn't, but that's the reality of this winter.
Tomorrow, I'll try to do a legit preview of the Missouri game, and we'll have the Open Thread and myself commenting on here during the game as well.

K-State vs. I-State GameBreakdown: Five Thoughts
Typical ISU game for the most part. How many times have we seen, what we saw this afternoon? Too many to count, in my opinion. Before I get into my thoughts, I will say that I have to give credit to the team for playing until the end. It sucks when you have to be in a position to give credit for something, you expect to see every game, but that lack of effort during the Baylor game, really was frustrating. It sucks when you're at the point where you feel like the fans care more about the result than the players. I still feel that way during sports at times, especially professional sports. I'm just a really competitive guy by nature, and it's hard for me to see somebody "ok with a loss", or losing pride in myself, and allowing my opponent to embarrass the hell out of me.
Oh yeah, and I thought the pink effort today was cool, so I'm going with that for the picture at the top.
Below are my five thoughts I took away from today's game:
1. K-State fans are straight classless online. If they had a fanbase with some class, it'd be much easier to respect them. It's their fans alone that make them one of the teams I dislike the most in the Big 12, and that's really too bad, because it's not a team I want to dislike....Rooting for our guys to be out for the game? I'm guessing K-State fans were on the Tonya Harding-side of things during the Winter Olympics back in '94.
2. Why does McDermott NOT use timeouts to break up runs? He's stated before, he wants to be able to have some left in crunch time, but guess what? If the game is out of hand by "crunch time", who cares? In the early part of the 2nd half, we saw K-State score on 4 straight possessions, while stopping ISU on 4 straight possessions. After the first couple, it was clear the team was out of sync? Why not burn a timeout, to try to break up the momentum and to regroup the team? We see this all the time, and we just continue to get 4-0 runs turn into 8-0 runs, or 6-0 runs turn into 12-0 runs. I don't think I've seen us run out of timeouts all year long. Might as well use some while it's still a game.
3. Can we get some urgency, earlier in the game? Why were we waiting to trap and trying to go for turnovers so damn late? I realize that in the pass when we've tried to press and trap, we've gotten burned. But guess what? Our defense against that team was non-existant. I would rather have us gamble with 4-5 mins left in the game, and actually give ourselves a chance to comeback, rather than throw up a barrage of 3s in the final minute, hoping to make every single one of them, and hoping the other team misses every single free throw. I'd rather see us lose by 15-16, being aggressive, than to see us lose by 4, because we were only aggressive when it was unrealistic to expect a comeback.
4. It was suprised (in a good way) with our rebounding effort. K-State is one of the best teams at offensive rebounding. To see us outrebound them as a % of possessions, was surprising in a good way. If we could have shot a little better, and/or play better defense, we could've had a better chance at this one.
5. The lack of support on offense was frustrating. Brackins had 29, Gilstrap with 18, and we still lose. Last year, with Brackins doing the bulk of the scoring, it felt like we were "one scorer away" from being able to compete more in the Big 12. With Gilstrap, you have a guy averaging 14-15 points per game, and it still feels like we are "one scorer away".
Lastly, credit goes to K-State. They are a good team, capable of competing for the Big 12 Championship at the tourney at the end of the year. People can say what they want about Frank Martin, but he gets a lot out of his players. Not looking forward to the matchup at their place later in the month, but there probably isn't a matchup that I am looking forward to at this point as an ISU fan. I just want to see some improvement.
In my opinion, K-State has built their team they way you want to in the Big 12. You have a couple of guards who can score, along with some bigs who can rebound. K-State seems to play better off the offensive rebound, than they do just running their offense. Pullen and Clemente make horrible decisions with their shot selection at times, but their front court is so good at getting the rebound, it doesn't hurt them as much. If they could find a way to not play down to their opponents, I could by into them being a Sweet 16 or Elite 8 team... Heck, even Final Four depending on the matchup. Problem is, they seem like they will be vulnerable to a mid-major picking them off in the 1st or 2nd round.
But enough about K-State for now.
It was another frustrating loss, and while you can take away some positives from the Cyclones today, it still isn't good enough when we're talking about being in Year 4, with a team of mostly upperclassmen. If this were the early days, or if we had a young team, I could buy into the moral victory angle a little bit.
Now the Cyclones play a couple of games away from Hilton. First at Columbia against Mizzou, then to Lawrence against the Jayhawks. I hope it isn't some pipe dream to hope for 1-1 on this next stretch....
What were your thoughts on the game?

Kansas State Preview
Well, here's the preview: K-State is better than us, and going to whoop us by 20+ points. They are athletic, physical, and going to cause havoc for our guys. They are going to force a bunch of turnovers, cause us to foul them a ton, and it could get pretty ugly.
So my plan is to pretty much watch Frank Martin all game, for entertainment. He doesn't get too crazy, but he's good for yelling at his own players and/or the refs a couple of times per game.
Who knows? Maybe K-State will play down to us, like they tend to do at Hilton, and the outcome isn't so bad...
It's a pink out for brest cancer. Cyclone Alley is going to be wearing pink (I believe), along with the players wearing white jerseys with a pink outline, pink shoes, and a ball with a pink Nike Swoosh on it. You can see how it looks here.
I wish I could say that I thought this would be a fun game, or better yet, that it's a game we could win. But honestly, there's nothing ISU has shown us over the past month and a half to show us that this team is ready for a tough matchup. Flat out giving up in the 2nd half against Baylor just a couple days ago didn't help their cause though.
Oh well. I'll be there. For those that cannot make it, the game will be on ESPN2. Game tips at 1pm CST.

My Quick National Signing Day Thoughts
First off, I will say that I think National Signing Day is an important day, but it's probably the most overrated thing in College Athletics. Unless you are in the Top 10 or so, it's all about system and development. I just don't see a huge difference between the #20 class and the #40 class. It's all pretty arbitrary.
I thought Cyclones.com did an awesome job with their signing day coverage. They've got bios on players, thoughts from the coaching staff, and pictures. You definitley should check it out if you haven't right here.
There were a few suprises. The first being that Cqulin Hubert switched up at the last minute from ISU to Texas Tech. But 1 guy out of the 28 added is a very small percentage. This type of stuff happens all the time. These guys are 17 or 18 years old and battling a ton of pressure. I'm not going to get too worked up about a guy who hasn't stepped foot on the field; I'm just not.
There were a handful of guys we had really heard nothing about (Pate, Wedderburn, Kron, and Gary), but not a huge deal. I like giving the nod to a handful of some local guys. They aren't necessarily going to be front runners to get a lot of playing time, but as a public University in the State, we should be giving some of the better High School players the chance to develop and see what they can do with time. It worked for Jesse Smith.
I think it's obviously our immediate needs were help on the Defensive Line, and help on the Linebacking Corps. Rony Nelson looks like he'll be a contributor, and Mattison and George look like good athletes, but it's hard to tell what kind of an impact they will have at this point. Since Nelson is a JUCO, assuming he gets his academic issues in order, I'll give him the nod to make the biggest impact on the defensive side.
Offensively, people are excited about Shontrelle Johnson. Hard not to be. He seems like a similar mold to A-Rob, and we could see him start off the year as the #2 guy behind him.
Overall, it's really hard to tell though. I think football is the hardest sport to project future talent. At Iowa State, we're never going to get the best recruiting class. We need to have a coaching staff that can find the right system to run for the players we have, and to develop our players. We won't know that for a few years. Football takes a long time to turnaround. This past year was good, and the next will probably be similar (but the schedule gets harder). After that, it's going to be a ton of rebuilding.
There are plenty of other schools with high quality programs pulling in average looking classes (Boise State and TCU for example). These schools know what they're looking for, and have the right system in place to allow for the guys they have coming in to achieve. Iowa State needs to be the same way.
The big thing people want to know is if this was a good recruiting class. I'd say that based on conventional rankings like Rivals, it is our best class in a long time. But, you really can't rate it until 3 or 4 years from now, when these guys are upperclassmen. Just the way it is. If it was easy, everyone would have it figured out.

Iowa State Loses To Baylor In Embarrassing, Formulaic Fashion
Not going to lie. I am pissed. This team lost almost all of the respect I had for them tonight. In the last 5 minutes of the game, they flat out gave up. Baylor alley-ooping and ISU guys just watching them do it. I can root for a team that plays hard but loses. I cannot root for one that stops trying.
McDermott, please pack your bags, and quit associating yourself with a school and team I once was proud of. The people of Ames and fans of ISU deserve much better. There won't be a better time than next year to blow this all up and end it now
How often have we seen this: ISU plays well for 1 half, but allows an early run in another half that ends up being the difference in the game? Yep, that's right. We've seen it against almost every team in the Big 12.
ISU plays even with Baylor in the 1st half. Baylor goes on a couple of larger runs in the 2nd half, and we end up sucking it up.
This team has no answers. They don't play hard consistently, they aren't improving, and our coaching staff cannot devise a plan for the 2nd half, that allows for them to gain an advantage.
We started this game well, and I was feeling good about our chances. Baylor kicks it up a couple notches, makes a couple of defensive and offensive adjustments, and we lose by double digits. We gave up too many easy shots defensively, slacked off on our rebounding in the 2nd half, and failed to get the shots to fall in the 2nd half. We also turned it over a few extra times in the 2nd half as well. All a recipe for a bad loss, against an athletic, offensive team.
If you shoot worse, and rebound worse, most times you are going to lose the game.
In my mind, this game was ISU's last chance to make the postseason: you get to play a ranked team on the road in an arena where there really isn't a homecourt advantage, against a team that has a rep for underperforming at times, coming off a huge emotional win, and this is the best we can do.
It would be more tolerable if we were improving, but we just are not.
It doesn't get any easier as we play K-State at home on Saturday. It's a pink out, so pink it up.

ISU At Baylor Gamethread: Get Ready To Get Your Drink On
Taking a quick look at the Big 12 standings, one would think it would be a huge game for ISU. A win here, and you'd be one step closer to getting to .500, and tied with Baylor in the standings.
Problem is, I don't think anyone is all that confident that ISU will win this one. I know I am not. Are they capable of it? Yes, but they don't play up to that level.
I'll be watching this, sipping on some sizurp, and posting my thoughts on the game here. Misery loves company, so be all means join in!

Clone Chronicles' 2010 National Signing Day Plans
The "big day" is tomorrow for NCAA Football Coaches across America, as well as fans who follow recruiting. Due to having a full time job, I will be unable to update the site as faxes are coming in tomorrow, so the plan is to do a recap of all things recruiting at the end of the day.
There have been some rumors, drama, and other things, and tomorrow night we will get a better picture of what is going on. I'll also chime in with my 2 cents with my thoughts about the day, not just for ISU, but in general.
Hope it's a fun an exciting day for you, and be sure to check us out here later on in the evening!
