Northern Iowa 24, Iowa State 13
This season is going to be a continuation of the ugly.
Complete recap to come tomorrow.
A few things to note.....
Bret Meyer's time appears to be getting short. 27-43 may not seem that bad, but two costly picks, as well as numerous forces into double coverage.
Todd Blythe had two catches, and was thrown to maybe three times. Nifty.
Our D-line was manhandled.
Still can't defend that damn screen pass.
Kicking game still inconsistent.
Drenard Williams supplants Sandvig as punt returner.
Austen Arnaud gets one drive, hits every WR in the hands.
Recap tomorrow.

revenge for UNI after last year
I don't really see how the clones can only score 13 points.
Make no mistake, the 3rd highest paid coaching staff in the Big 12 deserves some blame here.

The personnel looks so bad at times
It's hard to tell. The coaching staff can't do much (yet) about getting physically manhandle by an FCS team.
They need some time
McCarney left a mess in a lot of places and it's going to take some time to fix that. The coaching staff might be a problem but I don't think you would be able to see that yet. Specifically I'm thinking of the o-line and their abysmal pass protection over the last few years.
I don't know what is up with Meyer but he's been starting since he was a freshman and we have to have better play from him. His interceptions have increased every year and he's on pace for 24. I'm scared to see what the Big 12 defenses will do to us this year but as the season progresses I think he's going to see more and more of the bench as they prepare Arnaud or Bates.
I'm also at a loss about Blythe. At times he seems so dominant that it seems like it has to be either play-calling or QB decisions that are keeping him from getting the ball.
Either way it's going to be a brutal season.
Turnovers
You can't win ballgames when you're on the wrong side of a +4 turnover margin. We saw that last year when BM wasn't checking down but rather locking in on a target and his INT numbers skyrocketed. A new coach wasn't going to magically fix that, and here we are 0-2 as a team and Meyer's got a 1-4 TD-INT ratio. Throw in a couple of high snap fumbles and a few muffed punts and it's a miracle we're scoring at all. The defense is playing well enough to win, but the offense isn't giving the team a chance. The worst part is, these turnovers are giving the opposition incredible field position (think of the INT return to the 6 yard line or whatever in the KSU game). We're lacking composure out there, and I truly believe it comes from a losing mentality. I think the worst part of McCarney's legacy is not that he left the barn empty, but that he left the barn full of mentally-scarred players. It sounds harsh, but maybe the best way to sum it up is "you can't win with losers". I don't know if you can teach mental toughness, but I sure hope to god Chizik can. I hate to write off all of Mac's players, but I'm thinking a clean slate is what Chizik needs, and he won't get that for 4 years.
One more thing, I still think Chizik is our guy. I think he's a tough s.o.b. who's going to hammer in his philosophy. It's just going to take time and probably different players.

Changing the mind-set
Multiple people have talked about the need for a change in mindset. Going from "I'm good enough to lose in the Big 12" to "I'm good enough to win the Big 12 north if not the Big 12". This change in mindset has to be the biggest hurdle for Coach Chizik. With the defense that we have, they have played well enough that we should have been able to win had we kept down turnovers in both games and actually scored like we are capable of.
