Iowa State Basketball Gets 2012 Commitment

Not making that up, either.

Fifteen year old Wesley Staten of Sioux City West has given his pledge to coach Greg McDermott and the Clones.

It's pretty hard to break this one down. The article says he was getting interest from ISU, Iowa, UNI and Wichita State.

I understand wanting to nab talent before anyone else, but it's always going to be a gamble to offer a scholarship to a 15 year old.

In all seriousness though, McD did the same thing with Dykstra and he’s getting some love on recruiting services. I’ll take them however we can get them.

It's not like this means anything

other than keeping some of the other schools away — if he has a devastating injury than we can pull our commitment or ends up being the next Cory Johnson they can just pull their commitment at that time. All it means is that he wants to play there, so I don’t see the harm in it at all.

FWIW, Fennelly has been doing this type of thing for years in women’s basketball, and it’s worked out pretty well for him.
