Turner Gill to Speak With Iowa State

Per Marty Tirrell.

Gotta say, Gill isn't a bad place to start. Whether or not he ends up here, he's the guy you have to make contact with. I'm not quite sure how he didn't get the Auburn or Syracuse jobs, but I'd imagine if he wants to come to Ames, he'll sure as heck be a top candidate.

By the way, here's my first effort at an ISU coaching interest board.

It would be great, but

I don’t think Turner Gill will come to Iowa State. I hope that I am wrong because there is not a better person than Turner Gill in the coaching ranks. I was a student at Nebraska when he was there and he was one of those guys on campus that had everyone’s respect, not because he was a great player, but because he is a great person. He has demonstrated that in every step he has taken since becoming a coach. One only need to see the interview on the field after his team won the MAC to see what kind of coach he is. Maybe Pollard and whoever else is in on the search can get him to come to Ames, but my guess is that he will wait for an opportunity to go to a place with a stronger tradition and in a more fertile area for recruiting. I hope that I am wrong because he would look great in cardinal and gold!

Well

The fact he’s talking with our AD is a hell of a first step.

You are right

If it is true that he has agreed to talk, and I hope it is, it is a good first step. What is your gut feeling on this whole thing in regard to how quick this will move? Pollard puts no timelines on it, but yet when you read between the lines from the press conference, he knows it is crucial right now to get a coach on board because all of these guys are headed home at the end of this week for winter break.

Some have already started heading home today

….so I don’t think that’ll be the biggest concern. And he doesn’t want to rush it. But I can’t imagine we’ll take over two weeks at most.

You're right, I'm right...

We have to get someone ASAP to calm down the team and recruits. But it took JP all of a weekend to find a replacement to Mac. True, this was a little more unexpected, but going on that and the McDermott hire, he’ll move fast. I would be surprised if this wasn’t done before finals were over.

Next year

I don’t see any way that next year isn’t a mess for you guys, but whether you get Gill or not, my gut feeling is that you’re going to get the better of this deal. I just don’t see Chizik getting anything but run over by the SEC, and that’s without knowing how this whole racism firestorm is going to turn out. I wouldn’t be completely surprised if he doesn’t actually make it to the start of the season.

Can it get much worse than the 08 season?

Or 07 for that matter? I’m pretty sure we can juice two wins out of 09.

Agreed

I think next year could be nice if we can retain most of our young talent. It will be tough to learn a new system, but these guys sound motivated to prove the naysayers wrong…

Glad to hear this

I think he’d be a good hire. Hope they can get it done.
