Coaching Candidate Buzz

What's the latest on your favorite coaching candidate? I've given 1 to 5 stars for the possibility of Joe Q. Headcoach being named the head of the Cyclone Football team.

Candidate Amount of Buzz?
Dave Baliff, Rice HC

Rarely mentioned in connection with opening.
Gary Barnett, former Colorado HC

Rivals Radio reports he is a favorite.

Terry Bowden, former Auburn HC
Daddy's touting him, no one else, though.
Troy Calhoun, Air Force HC
Would be a top hire, still, little chatter around him.
Bill Cubit, Western Michigan HC
Solid midmajor coach, little connection.
Joe DeForest, Oklahoma State AHC
Nothing new since CycloneSportsReport story.
Bobby Elliott, former SDSU DC
Not a realistic target.
Phillip Fulmer, former Tennessee HC
Mentioned by Cotlar, while others vehemently deny he's a candidate.
Todd Graham, Tulsa HC
Early favorite has not been discussed the last couple of days.
Pat Hill, Fresno State HC
Denied interest (just like he did for UW job, which he interviewed for.)
Steve Loney, StL Rams OL Coach
Local favorite, likely didn't even get interviewed.
Gus Malzahn, Tulsa OC
See Graham.
Glen Mason, former Minnesota HC
Reportedly a favorite of Pollard, but no credible connections.
Tim Murphy, Harvard HC
Today's new flavor, shopping himself for the position.
Jay Norvell, Oklahoma OC
Likely interview candidate, not likely to get job.
Gary Patterson, TCU HC
Obvious top target. Don't push him out of picture yet.
Mike Stoops, Arizona HC
Reports already have him taking job and working out contract details. This year's Brian Kelly?
Tommy Tuberville, Auburn HC
Unlikely revenge hiring. Unless he's bored.
Brent Venables, Oklahoma DC
Reportedly contacted by Pollard. But would we go with another coordinator?

We're hearing so much about Stoops, that I'll almost be surprised if it is him. While Patterson remains my favorite choice (kinda like Chizik was last time), Stoops does seem like one of the more acceptable options of the 19 I've listed. He has BCS head coaching experience, has had luck recruiting (to Tucson, albeit), has a knowledge of the Big 12, is a name coach, and has slowly started to rebuild Arizona.

I wish I had some legitimate knowledge about what was going on (hell, e-mail me if you do), but I'm not sure anyone does.

My choices are down to Barnett or Mason

Recruiting scandal and all, Barnett was still a great coach with experience in the big 12 north that would translate well here.

Mason can put together some sick teams, the close finishes and collapses are another thing. But i’ll take that over anything i’ve seen in the last few years.

eh, Patterson and Calhoun

Those are my top choices, without a doubt…..not counting Tuberville and the gang

Probably not happening

True, but i’m also being realistic and basing this on proven past performances.
I just don’t see both coaches wanting to come to Ames when bigger profile positions might be available. I don’t see Patterson wanting to take a step down and rebuild ISU after the success he could have at a higher level.

Also, Calhoun might want to milk Airforce for some more time before bolting somewhere.

Let’s see what happens. Its fun reliving the intrigue of the 2006.
