Where Does The Nebraska Win Stack Up For You?

There's been a lot of talk about the win, and all of that, but I'm curious where this stacks up as far as Cyclone memories for you?

To me, this has to be the biggest win since I've started following the team in 2002. If you take into consideration the history of us losing in Lincoln, combined with our two biggest offensive playmakers sitting out for this game, and the fact that many did not expect much from this team this year, it was huge. This win is a program builder to say the least, and hopefully it's the beginning of more respect for Iowa State.

Just wanting to hear your thoughts on how big this win is in your mind, and if you've been a fan for a long time, how this stacks up against some of your other big Cyclone memories.

Refs

You have to hand it to the Big 12 refs. They tried their best on every big play to take it away from the Cyclones. Every big momentum shift was followed by a long booth review. They didn’t review the offensive holding call which would have gone in our favor. It was a game we weren’t supposed to win but we did and no one can take it away from us. A win is a win. A win in Lincoln is even sweeter.

Texas A&M 2005

The dominating win over Texas A&M was by far a great win than this one. The A&M decline had not yet started. This was the game that Blythe really put on a show. A&M has never been the same since.

This Nebraska game was big for the future, but almost all of our previous wins over Nebraska except the last one at home were bigger, considering how good Nebraska was when we knocked them off.

guess it depends on how you define 'decline'

The 2003 team went 4-8. Franchione was in his third season in ’05, so I would say we were well into our decline at that point.

Definitely an exciting and emotional win

It’s tough to put it into a larger context without knowing how the rest of the season or Paul Rhoads’ career plays out.

I think the win over Iowa in ‘05 might have been a little more surprising just because of the rankings even though we’d had a fair amount of recent success against them (that ISU team certainly lost its fair share of heartbreakers too).

The ‘02 Nebraska game was pretty special because both were top 20 teams and we hadn’t beaten them in 10 years. Plus, I was there and it was a pretty amazing event.

I’m just enjoying it for what it is because wins in Lincoln don’t come around very often.

Hate to sound old here . . .

Guys, this win isn’t close to top 10. This isn’t even in our top wins against Nebraska. Beating them in thier prime (1992, one of only two or three losses for Tommy Fraiser in college), winning there in 1977 (they were ranked 9th in the country), and even the 2004 game may have been bigger as it was a cleaner game (no debate after that game who whould have won agian if we played).

As for the “haven’t done this in awhile”, beating Iowa for the first time in 16 years was a MUCH bigger deal.

Winning a bowl game for the first time was a much bigger deal.

Also, I disagree on A&M being a big win (they were unranked at the time as well). Suprising, but not big. A&M hasn’t been at the level of OU or UT for decades. Beating one of them on the road would be something.

I would even say Mac’s first game, a night game (before Jack Trice had lights) vs Ohio was bigger. It was our first win in 22 months and served as the coming out party for Troy Davis.

Sorry guys, but football has been played at ISU before 2000.

Not Top 10?

First year for the new staff, and they are going for Bowl Eligibilty and could contend in the North, I think is pretty big. It gives the optomism that a lot can be done in the future.

I guess I just add more to it because we were without our biggest playmakers and we’re talking about a 2-10 team the previous year with 0 conference wins. 2002 NU, and 2005 Iowa and A&M were nice, but we had all of our big guys playing.

I guess I’m also a bit jaded about things that happened in 2002, 2004, and 2005 because those seasons left a lot to be desired.

The thing about this season is that when I predicted 6 wins before the year started, I got ripped on here by some, along with other SB Nation Blogs on here. To me if we can get to that mark (or better), attributed to winning at Lincoln for the 1st time in 32 years, how can that not be one of the hugest things the Cyclones have done? No one expected it, and it gives a lot of hope for the future.

I would agree though

That the Bowl Win and the 1998 Iowa win were as big if not bigger. I’d need more perspective in 1977 and 1992, but those were big upsets no doubt.

Not necessarily sold on the Ohio game, as that was a long time ago, but was that a game that people expected ISU to lose? I’m just trying to figure out on what that did in terms of building the program.

Here's a list of bigger wins:

- Texas Tech 2002 (propelled an Wallace to the top of Heisman discussion for a time)
- Nebraska 2002 (first game ever where ISU beat a ranked team while we were ranked: showed we belonged and weren’t a fluke)
- Pittsburg 2000 in Insight Bowl (first bowl win ever – 2nd to last of all major conference teams to win a bowl game)
- @ Iowa 1998 (first win against our biggest rival in 16 years)
- Ohio game in 1995 (goalposts came down, built hope for Mac’s era, Troy Davis emerged as a star)
- Nebraska in 1992 (major upset, tied for the highest ranked team ISU has ever beat at 7th)
- @ Oklahoma 1990 (they were 16th in the country, had been 29 years since we beat them, and you may not know how much Barry Switzer used to mock ISU)
- @ Nebraska 1977 (on the road beat the #9 team in the country, beat them twice in a row)
- Nebraska 1976 (beat the number 9 team in the country, our last win on the year and lead us to ending the year ranked for the first time ever)
- Missouri 1973 (first win ever against a ranked team)
- New Mexico 1972 (Propelled ISU to being ranked for first time in almost 40 years)
- San Diego State 1971 (win sent ISU to first bowl game)

From a history perspective, here are all of our wins against ranked teams:

All time wins vs ranked teams:
- 1973 vs Missouri (14)
- 1973 vs Oklahoma State (18)
- 1976 @ Missouri (7)
- 1976 vs Nebraska (9)
- 1977 @ Nebraska (9)
- 1981 vs Missouri (9)
- 1985 vs Oklahoma State (7)
- 1990 @ Oklahoma (16)
- 1992 vs Nebraska (7)
- 1993 vs Kansas State (19)
- 2002 vs Nebraska (20), ISU was ranked 19
- 2005 vs Iowa (9)
- 2005 vs Colorado (22)
13 wins in 163 games

I only commented on games I remember as an ISU fan

Which started in ‘99 but I recognize there are certainly bigger wins before my time. I generally agree with what you’re saying. This game could become more or less significant depending on how the rest of the games season (and even the next few years) go. A win that showed glimpses of future glories or a just a fluke?

However, a case can be made for this game. Stopped a 30+ year winless streak in Lincoln, it came on the heels of a brutal road-game losing streak, snapped a conference road-game losing streak, new coach, etc. Regardless of whether it’s “top ten” or whatever it was definitely one to enjoy.

fail
A&M hasn’t been at the level of OU or UT for decades.

Maybe if you consider 2000 to now ‘decades’, you might have a point.

But if you look at the mid ’80s up to 1999, you will see that is a false statement.

by Beergut on Oct 28, 2009 2:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Very True

I think it’s easy for some who don’t follow the South as closely to think that it’s always been all about Texas and Oklahoma….

It wasn’t too long ago that A&M was the class of the South, with Texas, OU, Tech, and OSU struggling….

by Mark Kieffer on Oct 28, 2009 9:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Facts don't agree

Since 1980:

Times ranked at end of year:
A&M: 13, none since 1999
UT: 19
OU: 20

Top 10 finishes:
A&M: 4
UT: 7
OU: 12

Conference Championships:
A&M: 7 (6 SWC, 1 Big 12), plus 1 South title
UT: 6 (4 SWC, 2 Big 12), plus 2.5 south titles (half is last year)
OU: 11 (5 Big 8, 6 Big 12), plus one south title

National Championships:
A&M: 0
UT: 1
OU: 2

Now, don’t get me wrong, as an ISU fan I’d trade ISU’s history for A&M’s in a second. But up against UT and OU, A&M had thier 4-5 years of dominance in the late 90’s before Stoops came. A&M was better than UT in most of the 80’s, but couldn’t compete with the OU of the 80’s.

correction

I meant the 02 nebraska game, not 04. sorry

by BurlingtonCy on Oct 27, 2009 8:52 AM CDT reply actions

I put this on terms with the 07 Iowa game. It was a rivalry game against a team we weren’t supposed to beat. The result is still good.

I was in the student section for the 2002 win at Jack Trice, so that one of course holds a special place in my heart. But this one isn’t one of the “better” wins against Nebraska. It did however prove to me at least that we have the right guy in at head coach, and a team who will fight down to the last play of every game.

If this is the Paul Rhoads era, this is one of the games they’ll look back on.

The '92 win over Nebraska is my personal biggest

I got married that day.

Hey Al, just go away, baby.
