The ISU wrestlers traveled to Cedar Falls to take on the UNI Panthers this afternoon. The result was pure destruction of the Panther wrestling team. ISU dominated from start to finish and ended up pulling out the 42-0 win. I missed the first few matches, but I turned the meet on in time to see 4th match of the meet. A short write-up and some thoughts are after the jump.
149 - Mitch Mueller major dec. Jamal Lawrence 22-8. Mueller recorded 6 takedowns in the 3rd period of this match
157 - Andrew Sorenson major dec. Tyson Reiner 13-3. Sorenson recorded 3 takedowns and a 3 pt near fall in the 3rd period of the match.
165 - Jon Reader tech. fall David Bonin 19-4 in 5:51. This was the first of 3 tech falls for the clones.
174 - Duke Burk dec. Jarion Beets 7-5. This was the first match that I saw. Burk had to fight his way back from an early deficit to pick up the win. Burk was helped out by 1:48 of riding time and a technical violation on Beets.
184 - Jerome Ward dec Andy O'Loughlin 8-2. Ward didn't have much trouble. The first and second periods were pretty close then Ward was able to pull ahead in late as O'Loughlin got worn down. Ward only gave up 2 escapes in the match.
197 - Jake Varner major dec. Dustin Bauman 13-4. After the intermission the meet picked up right where it left off. Varner was in control from the start. He built a riding time advantage of over 4 minutes on his way to the win.
HWT - David Zabriskie dec Christian Brantley 6-1 in overtime. This was an interesting match. It pitted what appeard to be a middle linebacker wrestling a defensive tackle. Zabriskie really looked small out there and he is not what i would call a small man. The match was tied at a point apiece after regulation so it moved into sudden victory where there was no scoring. This meant the match was going to be decided by two 0:30 tie breakers. In the first of these Zabriskie started in the down position which he promptly escaped. He was then able to take UNI's big man down for 2 more points, and he followed that up with a 2 point near fall. For a match in which there wasn't much action it sure ended on an exciting note.
125 - Andrew Long tech fall Terrence Young 19-4 in 6:46. There was quite a contrast between these past two matches. While Zabriskie's match had action that was few and far between, this match was full of it. The match was quite a scramble that ended in 5 more points to the Clones score.
133 - Nick Fanthorpe tech fall Ryan Jauch 22-5 in 6:47. This was another action filled match. Fanthorpe was the aggressor in the match recording 8 takedowns, a 2 point near fall late in the second period, and a three point near fall to end the match to 5 escapes and no takedowns by Jauch.
141 - Dalton Jensen pinned Alec Hoffman in 1:17. Jensen was filling in for Nick Gallick who sat out with an injury. All he needed to do was to not lose to preserve the shutout, and what does the guy do? He goes out and pins Hoffman out of nowhere after a takedown.
This victory is ISU's first shutout of UNI since a 35-0 performance in 1966. Up next for the Clones is the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill on December 29th and 30th. The next dual meet is at Minnesota on January 3rd.
