Wrestling: Kevin Jackson Named Head Coach

Iowa State named Kevin Jackson Head Wrestling Coach this afternoon.

Jackson during his Senior Year was a member of the last ISU National Championship Team in 1987.  He also went on to win a Gold Medal in the 1992 Olympics.

His previous coaching experience includes being an Assistant at Arizona State in 1997. Most recently he was the National Freestyle Coach for USA Wrestling from 2001-2008 and also head coach of the Sunkist youth development program.

To my knowledge no assistants have been named yet. While I love having an intense guy who's had success coaching at the International Level and wrestling at ISU, I do worry about his ability to be a head coach at the collegiate level. I hope he gets surrounded by some good assistants to help him with the learning curve.

You can read more about Jackson here

There will be a news conference tomorrow morning at 11am CST.

Could be a good hire

I like his coaching background from an individual wrestler development standpoint but, like you said, there might be some questions about coaching a college team. I still think it’s pretty good considering the circumstances.
