I did not make it up for this game, but it sounded like par for the course. Winning by 20-30 points was expected, and it was what ended up happening. Iowa State shot 52% from the field, and that really was the difference here. I am a bit suprised that ISU only won the rebound margin by 5. I'm also not thrilled we took 18 three point shot attempts, and only made 5. The three point percentage is probably going to be around the 36% mark by the time the season is said and done.
Anyhow, as far as individuals go, most of the starters had a pretty good game. DG led the way for the Cyclones, scoring 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting, while collecting 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Ejim bounced back a bit, scoring 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting, and had 10 rebounds (6 offensive) to go along with that. Off the bench, Palo picked up 8 points; good to see him score.
But what's even better was seeing that DeMarcus Phillips suited up and took the floor. The guy sat out the UNI game due to some academic issues, and there were grumblings about him being unhappy and wanting to leave the team. I have no knowledge of anything, but it would be a shame to have this guy leave, especially because one has to figure more opportunities will come. By all accounts, he can put the ball in the bucket, and we are going to need more scoring outside of the starting 5 to win some games. On top of that, you never know what may happen with other guys' health. Hopefully he sticks around, is committed to the team, gets his academics in line, and goes on to have a good career at Iowa State.
Up next for the Cyclones are the Hawkeyes in Iowa City, on Friday night. Tip off is at 7:30pm CST and will be aired on the Big 10 network.
