After starting off rough, against a scrappy, motivated Green Bay team, the Cyclones edged past Green Bay down the stretch with the help of the Hilton crowd. Honestly, this game had me on the edge of my seat for most of it. I haven't been this into a Cyclones basketball game in a while. It was a lot of fun.
To start the game, ISU missed a lot of open shots, and were a little lazy on defense. Gotta give props to #42 on Green Bay, Tetschlag, who dropped 29 points from all over the court. She literally carried Green Bay on her shoulders and was the only reason why they were in the game.
For the Cyclones, it came down to executing on defense down the stretch. We hit a couple more open shots than before, but for the most part it was an off shooting night, as they shot only 37% from the field, and 33% from beyond the arc. It was just an off night in general, as the Cyclones only shot 66% from the charity stripe, and didn't stay disciplined at times with their defense and boxing out.
What capped off the game, is when ISU was up by 1 with 8 seconds left in the game. Green Bay inbounds it to their point guard, and she goes to the corner, defended by Lacey. Lacey gives her a little room on the baseline, Green Bay drives, and Lacey's defense caused Green Bay's guard to step on the baseline with 4 seconds left. From there, it was fouls and free throws.
Now the Cyclones face the tough task of playing UConn on Sunday. Keeping this game within 15-20 points will be a moral victory. Doesn't matter though, I mean, nobody following the team would've predicted Sweet 16 when the season start. Heck, I heard people figuring we wouldn't go to the tourney at all.
So we'll just have to see what happens. Game tips off at 11am CST, Sunday on ESPN.
