End Of March Look At Cyclones Basketball Recruiting

New, 3 comments

I'm a guy that has been paying more and more attention to basketball recruiting in general. I don't have any kind of inside information at all, or anything like that. I just spent some time going onto Rivals and gathering some info. All of this stuff I'm sharing is free, I'm not posting any of the premium stuff.

With that out of the way, here's a summary of what I've gathered online. We have 3 open scholarships for the 2010 season, and assuming we'd fill them all, 3 additional scholarships for 2011.

We thought that we had one of the three filled for 2010, with John Wilkins, until he apparently backed out. Wilkins has offers from Bradley, Providence, and Indiana, and Indiana is the heir apparent if ISU does not get him.

So what now?

Let's look at 2010. Here are the guys with offers:

  • Will Clyburn, SF out of Marshalltown CC. Also has offers from Central Michigan, Duquesne, UNI, Saint Louis, Wichita State, and Utah. Teammate and friend of ISU 2010 signee, DeMarcus Phillips.
  • Darrell Haley, C out of Palmdale, CA. Also has an offer from Wyoming.

Depending on what happens with Wilkins, and the others, another option has emerged:

Bo Barnes, a SG out of Phoenix, AZ. Has many offers from mid-majors. The most known schools are Albany, Duquesne, Oral Roberts, and Evansville. Apparently, he's visiting ISU in a couple of weeks, so perhaps he's close to an offer.

Other than that, I have no clue what's going on. With the guys coming in Jordan Railey hasn't signed yet. Gotta hope that he follows through and signs that piece of paper, but as we've seen in years past, March - May have been unpredictable months for the McDermott staff in regards to recruiting and retention.

There are some other guys listed that may or may not be interested in ISU, but according to Rivals, these guys have no offers, so it's hard to tell.

Let's take a quick peek at 2011, just for fun. Of course, we have Melvin Ejim coming in, but there are going to be at least 3 additional open scholarships as well. Below are the guys we have offered:

  • Ross Travis, F from Chaska, MN. He's #133 in Rivals Top 150. Has offers from North Dakota State, UNI, Oregon State, Rice, and Santa Clara.
  • Chasson Randle, PG from Rock Island, IL. He's #45 in Rivals Top 150. He's going to be a really tough get. He has offers from Bradley, UConn, DePaul, Florida State, Harvard, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue, and Wisconsin. According to Rivals, Duke has been looking at him as well, but doesn't have an offer from them (at least not yet).
  • Forrest Robinson, C from Eastland, TX. Has offers from Arkansas, Centenary, LA Tech, N. Texas, Texas Tech, and Utah.
  • Andre Henley, SF from Chicago, IL. He's #126 in Rivals Top 150. Has offers from Illinois and S. Illinois. Xavier has been looking at him too, but doesn't have the offer.

With this 2011 class, I like the guys we're looking at. Just hard to say how it will turn out. Early in the process, you always go after the bigger fish that are realistic, but it's all about those 2nd, 3rd, and 4th choices at those spots if they don't work out. I'm going to be heading to the AAU events this summer, so hopefully I will be able to catch Travis, Randle, and Henley. That's all to be determined though.

If you follow recruiting closely, then you probably already know all of this, and maybe even more. I'm hoping to see some of these guys play, and throw in my two cents on what I think, but that will have to wait. For now, it's all about sitting tight, and seeing what April brings us in terms of filling the 2010 class.
